As the name suggests, it is a server with the predefined configuration or tailor made configuration specifically made for you and is kept at a datacenter. It has its own operating system and software to manage it. It is not shared with anyone, not even a single/small website.
What is a Virtual Private Server?
A virtual private server is like a dedicated server with its own operating system and software. Its configuration can be tailor-made to a certain extent. The major difference is that a virtual private server has “virtual partitions” that allow a server’s resources (CPU, RAM, bandwidth, storage space, etc) to be divided amongst other websites hosted on that particular server.
When Should You Consider a Virtual Private Server or Dedicated Server for Your Business?
This question comes in the mind of every business person that when should I go for dedicated server or virtual server. The answer to this question can be simple if you can answer to the below questions.
How many clients I have? A business with the number of clients more than enough to resist on a Virtual Private Server, resulting in the down performance of Virtual Private Server needs to go for Dedicated Server; otherwise Virtual Private Server is a good option.
How much bandwidth is consumed? Some of the Virtual Private Servers even though offers unmetered bandwidth, there is some or the other way a cap exist on the amount of the bandwidth which can be consumed. If your bandwidth limit is exceeding the limit every month it’s time to upgrade to Dedicated Server.
How much is server load? Depending on the usage of the server the server load may vary from business to business, for example a business allowing users to download files will require more server load than the business hosting static websites.
What kind of resource is required by me? Dedicated Server offers Dedicated Resources while Virtual Private server offers Shared Resources as it is a subset of Dedicated Server.
Level of dynamic usage and Sql Integration? This is a key point which is to be kept in mind that what is the level of dynamic in the application and the connection and queries of sql. The more the level of complex queries and more dynamic and integrated the application is, the technical specifications required are more. For example, a system like CRM, ERP, etc needs Dedicated Server as Virtual Private Server can’t be relied on.
Operating System installation? In Virtual Private Server operating system can be installed only from the list of choice given to the individual, while in Dedicated Server the operating system can be of the choice of individual.

Think on these points. Try to answer them and I am sure you will get to the conclusion that when you should go for Dedicated Server or Virtual Private Server
